IN PROGRESS
Play In Air reimagines a familiar tool, the artist’s easel, as a sculptural form and civic object. Rather than displaying art, these structures become instruments for creativity and connection. The project builds on plein air, French for “open air”, a painting tradition rooted in observation and freedom. Where 19th-century artists once carried their easels outdoors, Play In Air leaves them there permanently, turning the landscape itself into the subject of creation. Fabricated in Five Points at Superior Iron Works, the easels will merge industrial precision with human-scale intimacy. Powder-coated finishes and slate surfaces invite touch, drawing, and reflection. By transforming the tools of art into public infrastructure, Play In Air turns the banks of the Platte into a stage for creative participation and contemplation. It blurs the boundary between art and environment, artist and observer—reminding us that creativity belongs in the open air.
